LADY HORNETS TOO MUCH FOR COPPIN STATE

LANAYJHA ASHE REACHES 1,000 POINTS FOR HER CAREER

Dover, Del. (Feb. 1) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets defeat Coppin State 72-55. DSU improves to 8-11 overall and 4-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
"I think so highly of my team that most coaches after a 17-point win would be satisfied. I'm not I know we can play better on both sides of the ball; I know we're better than (how we played) today and we have to keep working." Caputo continued. "I believe we are serious competitors for the MEAC Championships, we need more time together, more practices more film sessions, but if we play our 'A' game on both sides of the court, no doubt about it."

Delaware State trailed 12-11 after the first quarter but they open the second on a 11-4 run. The flurry starts with Miajah Bullock finding her JUCO teammate DeMaurea Moore for a layup with 9:39 remaining in the quarter. The run ends with Lanayjha Ashe scoring in transition taking a 23-16 lead with 4:43 left.

DSU forward Tierra Floyd gives them their largest first half lead at eight after nailing a three-pointer with 1:36 remaining in the half.

The Lady Hornets only led 33-31 with just over two minutes into the second half. Tierra Floyd responds by knocking down another triple extending the lead to five with 8:21 left in the quarter.
Floyd finishes the game with a team high 14 points, nine rebounds, two steals and one block. "I just take what the defense gives me, and my teammates were finding me for open shots. Floyd stated". "The injury kind of set me back, missing those nine games, but I feel like I'm getting back into everything and my conditioning is back."

After a pair of free throws from Janasia Law, she gets a steal on defense and goes coast to coast for a layup, giving Delaware State a 39-31 lead.  Two more free throws, this time by Sharajah Collins, caps off the 8-0 run and giving them their first double digit lead at ten with 6:17 remaining in the third.

Coppin State were able to get the deficit down to eight points, but DSU scores eight unanswered points to lead 51-36 after three quarters.

The highlight of the game happens when Tierra Floyd inbounds the ball to Lanayjha Ashe who goes coast to coast and skies in the air to finish with a layup despite the foul. The senior guard from Northwest Halifax high school hits the ensuing free throw with 2:14 left in the game extending the lead to 20 points, their largest lead of the game, but more importantly it was Ashe's 1,000th point of her career.

"I didn't want to be selfish with the ball, so I wasn't planning on reaching 1,000 points." Ashe said. "My shot was not falling in the first half.  I didn't know how many points I had but I was just letting it ride."

Delaware State shot 27-of-62 (43.5%) from the field, but just 6-of-25 (24.0%) on three-point attempts.

Lanayjha Ashe scores 13 points and Sharajah Collins adds 10 points and six rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
