Dover, Del. (March 2, 2019) ---The Delaware State University Equestrian team closed out the final home meet of the season with a big conference win over South Dakota State 10-9. The Hornets victory came on “Senior Day” and was accompanied by three Most Outstanding Performer awards.  

The Hornets started strong with several dominating performances, splitting the Horsemanship 2-2. Senior Samantha Elliott and sophomore Kelsey McArthur both received scores of 75.5, the highest scores for the event. Junior Elizabeth Lynch rode to a solid 70 aboard “Hunter” to tie her point.

Equitation on the Flat saw the Hornets take home two of the five possible points. Sophomore Sydney Wicklund bested her opponent aboard “Deal” 85-72, her second consecutive win on the Flat. Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Fournier rode to a score of an 84 aboard “Lophius”. Her stellar performance saw her bring home the event's Most Outstanding Performer honors.

The Hornets proved to be too much for the Jackrabbits in the reining, winning the event 3-2. Freshman Amber Van Segbrook rode to a score of a 72, besting her opponent by four and a half points. Van Segbrook's ride earned her her second Most Outstanding Performer honors of the weekend. Freshman Grace Wilson and junior Shelbe Jarrett also took home points for the Hornets.

Delaware State entered the final event, Equitation Over Fences, tied 7-7.

A 3-2 win in the Equitation Over Fences sealed the overall win for the Hornets. Gabrielle Fournier edged her opponent 86-85, earning her second Most Outstanding Performer honors of the day. Sophomore Sydney Wicklund also earned a point aboard “Cass”, scoring an 82. Freshman Anabelle Cimoli also earned a point aboard “Patton” in her first career appearance for DSU.

Delaware State heads to Blythewood, South Carolina (March 8) for the final match of the regular season against USC.
