LADY HORNETS FALTER DOWN THE STRETCH

Farmville, Va. (Dec. 15) --- The Delaware State Lady Hornets were defeated 78-62 by the Longwood University Lancers. The Lady Hornets fall to 4-6 on the season.

The Lancers started the game on an 11-3 run. Delaware State responded with a 12-5 run. Lyric Turner capped off the flurry, as she nailed a jumper with 4:00 minutes left in the first quarter. Turner's basket cut the deficit to one at 16-15.

However, the Lady Hornets trailed 25-18, after the Lancers used a 9-3 run to end the first quarter.

Delaware State still trailed by seven points with 5:50 left in the half, when Lanayjha Ashe hit her second three-pointer of the quarter. Ashe's basket cut the deficit down to four points at 32-28. The Lady Hornets hit six free-throws (four free throws made by Sharajah Collins) on their next three possessions to take their first lead of the game, 34-32 with 3:46 left in the half.

The Lancers would quickly retake the lead, as Longwood used a 9-3 run late in the second quarter, to lead 41-37 heading into halftime.

Hornets forward Zoe Holmes tied the game up at 41, with 8:04 remaining in the third, after Janasia Law dished it to her for the layup.

Again, the Lancers had an answer they used a 10-3 run to reestablish a seven point lead, with 4:12 remaining in the third quarter.

DSU guard Janasia Law drilled a three-pointer cut the deficit to four. After a basket from the Lancers, Law found DeMaurea Moore for a layup, cutting the lead down to 53-49 with 2:42 left in the quarter.

After one made free throw from DSU and a basket from the Lancers, Lanayjha Ashe dishes a pass to Lyric Turner who buried a three-pointer to cap off their 9-4 run, and cut the Lancers lead to just two points with 1:25 left.

However, the Lancers scored two late baskets to lead 59-53 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Hornets had nothing left in the final period, as they were outscored 19-9. DSU shot just 23.1% from the field in the final ten minutes of the game.

Delaware State shot just 20-of-60 (33.3%) on field goal attempts, including 9-of-31 (29.0%) on three-pointers.

Lyric Turner led the Hornets with 16 points. Turner also added five rebounds and one assist.

Sharajah Collins was the only other Lady Hornet in double figures, she finished with 14 points, a team high seven rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Longwood shot 26-of-61 (42.6%) from the field and 5-of-14 (35.7%) from beyond-the-arc.
