Farmville, Va. (Nov. 16, 2018) --- Delaware State wrapped up a four-game road swing to begin the season with an 89-73 loss to Longwood Friday evening. Isaiah Walton led three Longwood players in double-figures with a game-high 21 points. Walton's performance was highlighted by five three-point field goals (5-for-10). JaShaun Smith added 19 points (7-10 FGs) and Sean Flood came off the bench to tally 10 for the Lancers.
Fahim Jenneto (fr.) and Saleik Edwards (sr.) led Delaware State with 17 points each, while former Sussex Tech (Del). High School star Kevin Larkin (gr.) scored 13 points in his season debut for the Hornets. Larkin missed the first three DSU games due to injury.
Jenneto was 7-for-8 from the field in his career-high scoring performance, while Edwards knocked down four three-point field goals in the game. Larkin also led the Hornets with eight rebounds.
Longwood scored the first nine points of the game, and opened up a 23-6 lead on a lay-up by Lorenzo Phillips with 15:22 left in the first half.
The Hornets trailed 34-15 before mounting a run midway through the first half. DSU scored 18 of the next 21 points and pulled to within 37-33 on a three-ball by Jonathan Mitchell at the 6:15 mark of the half.
Delaware State knocked down 12-of-19 shots, including 6-of-8 from three-point range during the run.
The rally allowed the Hornets to stay close at the half, only trailing by a 49-42 count.
Longwood began to pull away again early in the second half, opening up a 61-48 lead on a dunk by Smith with 14:43 left to play.
The Hornets could pull no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. Longwood led by as many as 21 down the stretch.
Delaware State shot a season-high 44.6% in the contest (25-56) and also had a season-best 12 three-point field goals (12-32).
The Hornets will play their home opener on Monday (Nov. 19) against the College of St. Elizabeth. Game time is 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
