WOMEN PLACE FOURTH, MEN FINISH FIFTH IN LID-LIFTER INVITATIONAL TO OPEN 2015

(Princess Anne, Md.) – Saturday afternoon, the Delaware State cross country program kicked off the 2015 season with the UMES Lid-Lifter Invitational, as the men finished fifth (138 points) out of five teams, while the women finished fourth (106 points) out of six teams.

The best finish of any Hornet runner came on the women's side with Nicole Gazzola finishing 15th with a time of 22:20.78.

Erin Cooper of Delaware State was right behind her at 16th with a time of 22:25.56.

Gazzola and Cooper were the only two women Hornets to finish inside the top-20.

The overall best time in the women's race came from Morgan State's Karen Escobedo, who finished in 18:59.49.

Although Escobedo had the best time, it was Maryland Eastern Shore who finish ahead of everyone, followed by Morgan State, Norfolk State, Delaware State, Coppin State and District of Columbia.

For the men, Emanuel Hitch had the best time for the Hornets with 19:07.44, and that was good enough to finish 22nd.

The next closest Hornet was Charles Wulff-Cochrane who finished 27th with a time of 21:47.97.

The best time from the men's race came from Khalil Rmidi Kinini of Maryland Eastern Shore who finished in 15:25.02, and his team took first as a whole. Coppin State finished second, followed by Norfolk State, Morgan Sate and Delaware State.

The Hornets will look to get back on track next Saturday as they host the Hornet Invitational at 9 a.m in Smyrna, Del.
