LADY HORNETS FALL TO MEAC LEADING PIRATES

Hampton, Va. (Feb. 11, 2013) --- Delaware State put up a solid second half effort, but it wasn't enough in a 75-56 loss to MEAC leader Hampton at the HU Convocation Center this evening.

The Lady Hornets (8-14; 5-4 MEAC) trailed 21-9 after 10 minutes and was behind 38-21 at the half.  DSU was 8-for-26 from the field (30.8%) in the first 20 minutes.  

Delaware State played much better in the second half, although Hampton maintained a double-digit lead throughout. The Lady Hornets hit 16 of their 27 second half shots (59.3%), and was only outscored 37-35 after the break.

DSU trailed 60-38 before giving the Pirates a bit of a scare. The Lady Hornets ran off 10 straight points, and pulled to within 60-48 on a lay-up by Tasia Bristow with 5:47 left to play. Keyanna Tate had six points and Bristow four during the spurt.

Delaware State trailed 64-52 after a jumper by Tierra Hawkins with 3:42 left, but Hampton scored the next six points to dash the Lady Hornets' hopes.

Hampton (19-5; 10-0 MEAC), winner of the last two MEAC women's championships, won its 10th straight game.

Hawkins was high scorer for the Lady Hornets with 18 points. She was 9-for-16 from the field, and also led the team with eight rebounds. Hawkins has reached double figures in scoring in 13 of the last 14 games and 19 times in DSU's 22 contests this season.

Deanna Harmon chipped in 11 points, while Jade Washington had a team-high seven assists for DSU. Kianna D'Oliveira had two blocks to give her 103 in her career at Delaware State.

Alyssa Bennett led five Hampton players in double figures with a game-high 21 points. She was 8-for-10 from the field, including 4-of-4 on three-point shots.

Delaware State outrebounded Hampton 33-30 in the contest.

The Lady Hornets return to action this Saturday (Feb. 16) at home against Coppin State. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
