DOVER, Del. - Football sophomore Rodney Gunter (Lake Hamilton, Fla.) and equestrian senior Alyssa Berfield (Fredericksburg, Va.) were named Monday the Delaware State University student-athletes of the week.
Gunter collected a career-high three sacks for a loss of 18 yards in addition to six tackles in the Hornets' 23-20 double overtime loss at North Carolina Central. The loss was DSU's first since Sept. 22 against Florida A&M and puts the team at 5-4 overall and 4-2 in the MEAC. The Hornets will play their 2012 home finale this Saturday against Hampton at 1 p.m.
Berfield won three of her four points and earned MVP honors this past weekend against Tennessee-Martin and South Dakota State at Gambler's Choice. Additionally, she tallied a team point with a 79-point Equitation ride on Sam. She also recorded a team point against UTM with a ride of 71 in Equitation.
The Hornet equestrian team narrowly fell to UTM and lost to SDSU. DSU and the Skyhawks tied, 9-9, in a head-to-head score, but UTM was victorious with a raw equivalency score of 1475.75 to 1420.25 Friday. The Jacks defeated DSU, 10-6, Saturday.
Saturday's show wrapped up the fall schedule for Hornet equestrian. They next travel to Martin, Tenn. to take on UTM and Oklahoma State Jan. 25-26.
