DOVER (October 10, 2008) ? Junior Cassandra Joyner tallied 20 kills for only the second time this season, but it wouldn't be enough offensively as the Howard Bison took down the Hornets 3-2, on Friday evening. (23-25, 25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 10-15) With the loss the Hornets fall to 1-2 in the MEAC. (7-9 overall)
The match saw ups and downs for both teams as neither firmly took control of the match. DSU would rally after a tough loss in the first game by winning the next two. Howard would find their way back, however, by pulling out a tough fourth game victory to take the match to a decisive fifth game. In that game, the Bison would tally eight kills and no errors to cement the victory and a perfect 3-0 conference record.
Leading the way for Howard was outside hitter Gazelle D'Artois, who had 18 kills along with eight digs. Grace DiMichelis, who came into the match averaging 8.09 assists/game (fourth in MEAC) tallied a staggering 48 assists to help secure the win for the surging Bison.
For the Hornets, setters Martina Ferrari and Sarah Wheatcroft combined for 41 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Erica Tajchman led the way defensively for DSU, recording 10 digs.
The Hornets will try and bounce back from their current two-game losing streak when they travel to Baltimore, Maryland to take on Morgan State, this Sunday. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
