Dover, DE --- Freshman Sarah Wheatcroft tied for game-high honors with 12 kills and led all players with 24 assists in Delaware State's 3-0 win over Howard in MEAC volleyball Thursday in Memorial Hall. The scores were 30-24, 40-38 and 30-16. The Hornets have won three straight and five of the last six to improve to 8-18 overall and 5-3 in the MEAC North. The Bison have lost four in a row to drop to 5-26 and 4-6. Cassandra Joyner also had 12 kills, while Ayana Dyette recorded 11 kills and 10 digs for the Hornets. Laura Huculak contributed 22 assists and nine digs to the win. Three players had eight kills to lead Howard, while Gazelle D'Artois had a game-high 27 assists for the Bison. In the first game, the score was 7-7 before the Hornets scored eight of the next 10 points to open up a 15-9 lead. Howard could get no closer than three points the rest of the game. In the game two marathon, Delaware State led 16-11 before Howard rallied to take a 26-25 lead. There were 13 ties before consecutive kills by Dyette and Joyner sealed the game for the Hornets. It was the longest game in DSU history, surpassing the 37-35 score in the first game of a loss to UMES in 2006. In the third game, Delaware State used a 6-1 rally to lead 10-4. The Hornets opened up their first double-digit lead (19-9) on a kill by Joyner. Delaware State will return to action on Saturday (Nov. 3) against Coppin State in Memorial Hall. The Senior Night match will begin at 7:00 p.m.
