Cherelle Dennis joined the women's basketball program as an assistant coach in June 2022.
With more than 15 years of coaching experience, Dennis arrived in Dover after most recently serving Lincoln (Pa.) University for five years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. While at Lincoln, Dennis played a pivotal role in capturing the first CIAA championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in team history in 2022. The Lady Lions were also CIAA Northern Division Champs during the 2021-22 season. Her responsibilities at Lincoln included scouting, campus visits, travel operations and game day preparations, in addition to managing day-to-day operations and fundraising for the Quest2belite basketball camp.
As the team’s recruiting coordinator, Dennis was responsible for identifying talent and arranging campus visits. Her eye for talent helped bring All-American and CIAA Player of the Year Kwanza Murray and Bryanna Brown to the program. Among other top recruits she attracted to Lincoln were: Kryshell Gordy (2021-22 All-CIAA First Team), Janya Lilly (2020-21 CIAA All-Rookie Team), DeAshia Young (2020-21 All-CIAA First Team), Michelle Fitzgerald (Al-CIAA First Team; CIAA-All Tournament Team) and Jada Queen (2018 CIAA All-Rookie Team).
Prior to Lincoln, Dennis coached for three seasons at Newark Charter High School in Delaware. She was an assistant for two seasons at Newark Charter before being named as head coach for the 2015-16 season.
Dennis also served as an assistant coach at Appoquinimink High School in Delaware from 2007-12. While at Appoquinimink, she helped lead the program to back-to-back conference titles and the school’s first state tournament final four appearance in 2012.
Born in Yorktown, Va., and raised in Wilmington, Del., Dennis played collegiately at Cecil Community College (Md.) for two seasons, guiding the school to a conference title.
Dennis completed her collegiate playing career at Lincoln (Pa.) during the 2005-06 season. Afterward, she joined the Delaware Destroyers of the West Elite Basketball Association from 2007-09. Dennis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Lincoln University in 2007. She also has a master’s in School Leadership from Wilmington (Del.) University in 2010.
