Head Coach Stan Waterman enters his sixth season leading the Delaware State University program in 2026-27.
Waterman, a legendary high school coach and administrator at the prestigious Sanford School (Hockessin, DE), USA Basketball Coach, and former collegiate player at the University of Delaware, was announced as DSU’s men’s basketball coach on June 4, 2021. In his 29 seasons at the Sanford School, Waterman led the program to 571 wins, 10 state championship game appearances, winning eight state titles, including his last two seasons in 2019 and 2021. His 2022 team reached the state championship game that was never played as the tournament was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Waterman led the Warriors to state titles in his inaugural campaign in 1992, 2002, and for three consecutive seasons from 2010- 2012. Waterman also served in the roles of Dean of Students and Assistant Director of Athletics at the school.
In 2016, after leading the Warriors to a sixth state championship, Waterman was honored by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association as the Tubby Raymond Delaware Coach of the Year.
Waterman also served as a member of the prestigious USA Basketball Coaching Staff. He was an assistant coach on the gold-medal winning 2018 USA Men’s World Cup Team and the 2017 Men’s U16 national team. Waterman served as an assistant coach for the 2020 Nike Hoop Summit Tram (Did not compete due to the pandemic) and was also an assistant coach for the 2019 Hoop Summit team that defeated the World Select team in Portland, Oregon.
Waterman was a four-year letter winner at the University of Delaware where he played for Steve Steinwedel and Ron Rainey. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 1989.
In his first four seasons at the helm, Waterman ignited a turnaround improving the program’s win total in each season. This included a 15-win season in 2023-24 and a spot in the MEAC tournament championship game. That success did not go unnoticed as the Hornets received an invitation to participate in post season competition in the CBI (College Basketball Invitational Tournament), featuring 16 teams from across the country. The Hornets were seeded 14th. The acknowledgment and awards continued as Waterman was named the 2024 Male Coach of the Year at DSU. In 2025, Waterman was named a finalist for the National Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award. This award is presented annually to the division 1 coach who wins with integrity on and off the court.
Former Villanova Head Coach Jay Wright, a two-time NCAA champion and 2021 Basketball Hall of Fame Inductee said, “Stan is an outstanding leader in our game. His basketball knowledge and experiences are elite. Delaware State made a great choice in Stan Waterman.”
Waterman and his wife Robyn, are the proud parents of daughter, Paris Waterman-Dupree and grandparents of grandson Cairo Dupree (6) and granddaughter Austyn (4 months).
