Shahid Perkins enters his sixth season as Associate Head Coach at Delaware State University, bringing more than three decades of experience as a player, coach, educator and mentor to the Hornets’ program.
Since joining the Delaware State coaching staff, Perkins has played an integral role in the development of the program’s student-athletes. He has helped produce more than six All-MEAC selections and three All-Rookie honorees, while contributing his extensive knowledge and experience to the continued growth of the Hornets’ basketball program.
Perkins’ coaching career is rooted in a distinguished playing background. A standout at Glasgow High School in Delaware, he continued his career at Hagerstown Community College, where he earned All-American honors and was nominated for the school’s Hall of Fame. He later enrolled at East Tennessee State University, where he served as team captain and led the Buccaneers in scoring during his senior season. Perkins earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from ETSU in 1996.
Following his collegiate career, Perkins played professional basketball in Iceland and England before returning to Delaware and beginning a career in public education. He eventually returned to his alma mater, Glasgow High School, where he served as the varsity boys’ basketball head coach for 15 years.
During his tenure at Glasgow, Perkins established himself as one of Delaware’s premier high school coaches. He earned four Blue Hen Flight A Coach of the Year honors and guided the program to one state tournament Final Four appearance and four Final Eight appearances.
Perkins also has extensive experience developing young players through AAU basketball. He coached the PBC AAU program for seven years before spending three seasons with the WER1 Select AAU program, helping prepare numerous student-athletes for the next level.
From 2015-21, Perkins served as a key member of Stan Waterman’s staff at Sanford School, where he helped lead the program to three state championships. His experience at Sanford further strengthened a coaching résumé distinguished by player development, championship success and a commitment to building winning cultures.
In addition to his collegiate and high school coaching responsibilities, Perkins is the founder and executive director of the Perkins Basketball Camp which he held for 10 years during the summer at Glasgow High School serving up to 100 young athletes ages 7-17. Through the camp, Perkins continues his lifelong commitment to developing young players both on and off the court.
A former professional and collegiate player, championship-winning coach and longtime educator, Perkins brings a unique combination of playing experience, coaching expertise, player development and mentorship to Delaware State University.
