Robb Johnson is in his second season on the Delaware State staff, appointed by head coach Lee Hull as running backs coach/recruiting coordinator on Feb. 1, 2023.
Johnson, who also served as an assistant coach on Hull’s 2014 MEAC football co-championship coaching staff at Morgan State, brings a wealth of football coaching experience of 19 years overall.
Johnson coached at Towson University, Bowie State University, and Stevenson University. He also has NFL coaching experience, having served in an internship role through the NFL Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship for the Washington Redskins (now Washington Commanders).
At Morgan State, where Johnson also starred as a stand-out defensive back, he was an integral coach of a first-year coaching staff under the leadership of Hull. He helped guide the Bears to a share of the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Football Championship, which was Morgan State’s first MEAC football championship title in 35 years. In that same season, the Bears represented the MEAC in the 2014 NCAA FCS football playoffs, which was the university’s first-ever college football playoff appearance.
At Bowie State (2007-10), Johnson served in many capacities—quarterbacks coach, recruiting coordinator, and passing game coordinator. He was the quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 2009. In 2009, his highlight was helping coach the team to the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division Championship, where they would end up being runner-up to the CIAA Conference Champions—Fayetteville State University. During that year, he coached freshman quarterback Tyrae Reid (now offensive assistant, Washington Commanders) to the 2009 CIAA All-Rookie Team. That same year, another freshman quarterback, Emmanuel Yeager, was a two-time CIAA Offensive Rookie of The Week.
Johnson has served as a high school head football coach at Pikesville High School (Maryland), New Town High School (Maryland), as well as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel High School (Maryland). Johnson was hired to up-start the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel football program and was the first-ever head football coach there from 2010-13.
Johnson, a Baltimore, Md. native, was a standout defensive back for the Morgan State University football program (1988-91), where he earned varsity letters all four years as a starter. In 1989, as a sophomore, Johnson was the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) interceptions leader, finishing the season with seven. He was named to the All-MEAC Second Team Defense. His collegiate honors also include All-MEAC Honorable Mention (1990 and 1991), 1990 Street & Smith Magazine Pre-Season Division I-AA (now FCS) All-American, and 1990 Sporting News Pre-Season Division I-AA (FCS) All-American. His 13 career interceptions rank him tied for No. 2 on Morgan State’s All-Time Career Interceptions list.
Additionally, Johnson was a stand-out high school quarterback at Overlea High School. At Overlea, Johnson started as a true freshman, where they won two County Championship and two MPSSAA Regional Championships. He was the winningest quarterback in Overlea High School's history. Johnson was inducted into the Overlea High School Athletics Inaugural Hall of Fame Class in 2019.
Johnson is a U.S. military veteran, having served in the United States Air Force from 1994 to 2002 and having served in the Security Forces. His duty stations included Langley Air Force Base (1st Security Forces Squadron) located in Hampton, Virginia and RAF Chicksands (774th SPS, now closed), located in Bedfordshire, England (United Kingdom). He has served deployments for the U.S. Air Force Security Forces in Al-Khobar (Saudi Arabia), Dhahran (Saudi Arabia), and Kuwait (Saudi Arabia) in support of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield, as well as a deployment in support of a NATO mission at Aviano Air Base (Italy).Â
Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Baltimore. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), a Prince Hall AF & AM Mason (Clarence H. Beavers, Masonic Lodge No. 124, RAF Alconbury (United Kingdom), and a member of the Morgan State University Varsity M Club, Inc.
Johnson and his wife, Shana Johnson (formerly Yarborough, a graduate of Spellman University), currently reside in Essex, Md. of Baltimore County and are the parents of three children: Gabrielle (12), Faith (23), and My’Kal (25).
