Smith joined the Delaware State staff in July 2021 after four years as an assistant coach at Wesley College in Dover, Del.
During the pandemic affected 2020-21 season, Smith served as Wesley’s assistant head coach/ defensive coordinator & recruiting coordinator, in addition to managing the secondary. 
In 2017 at Wesley, Smith helped coach the second-best scoring defense in the New Jersey Athletic Conference and helped the Wolves post a school record three-game scoreless streak. Under his tutelage, Samer Manna earned All-Region honors, while Manna and Mike Sabino were All-NJAC selections. 
Prior to Wesley, Smith was a member of the coaching staff at Montana State University-Northern, where he served as the linebackers coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach since August 2014. In two of his three years as linebackers coach for the Lights, at least one of his charges finished in the top 10 in the Frontier Conference in tackles.
Before his time at Montana State-Northern, Smith began his coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Mount Union, where he served as assistant linebacker coach in 2012. During his season with Mount Union, the Purple Raiders won the Division III National Championship. Smith also coached the linebackers at Miami Beach Senior in 2013.
Smith had a successful playing career for the Purple Raiders, where he was a two-year starter at linebacker and played in two national championship games. He was named a First Team All-Ohio Athletic Conference linebacker in 2011.
Smith then played professionally from 2012-15 in several indoor football leagues, including the Indoor Football League for the Allen Wranglers, Wyoming Calvary and Billings Wolves, Marian Blue Wolves of the Continental Indoor Football League and the Amarillo Venom of the Lone Star Football League.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education with a minor in health and education from the University of Mount Union in December 2012. Smith then earned his Master of Science in education, instruction and learning from Montana State University-Northern in May of 2017.
