DOVER, Del. — The Delaware State volleyball team took care of business in straight sets (25-13, 25-17, 25-23) to defeat South Carolina State on Sunday at Memorial Hall.
The win improved the Hornets' record to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in MEAC play.
Aaliyah Mitchell led the Delaware State attack with 10 kills, while Courtney Nix added six. Nix also paced the defense with 16 digs and a match-high six aces, and Duura Kpea contributed five blocks. Paige Ahakuelo set up the offense with a match-high 20 assists.
Delaware State came out strong in the first set, hitting .412 as a team with 10 kills and six aces to close it out 25-13. The Hornets' front row backed up that performance defensively, blocking five South Carolina State attacks in the set.
The Hornets carried that momentum into the second set, never trailing en route to a 25-17 win. Delaware State built a lead as large as 10 points at 24-14 and finished with 15 kills in the set.
The third set was closer, with two lead changes before Delaware State took the lead for good at 17-16. The Hornets held on from there, closing out the match with a 25-23 win. Three aces and four blocks from the front row helped seal the sweep.
