Hornets Split 1-1 in First Day of Norfolk Series

GAME 1 | Delaware State 7, Norfolk State 6
 

NORFOLK, VA --The Delaware State Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 7-6 win against the Norfolk State Spartans on Saturday.

Kaylanie Rodriguez (2-2) got the win for Delaware State (6-9, 1-0). The right-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing two walks and striking out one.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Trailing 1-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the second inning. Delaware State managed to push across two runs in the inning.

The Spartans then tied the ballgame at two before the Hornets came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Delaware State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Mianna Lopez Del Haro, which brought the Hornets' lead to 5-2.

Norfolk State narrowed Delaware State's lead to 5-3 before the Hornets stretched the advantage to 7-3 in the fifth inning. The Hornets pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Allyson Fonollosa that scored Annalisse Santana and Nevaeh Terrell. Norfolk State put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Delaware State still held on for the 7-6 win.
 

GAME NOTES

» Terrell picked up three hits in the game for Delaware State.
» Delaware State's highest scoring inning was the fourth, when it pushed three runs across.
» The Hornets had control of the rest of the game after moving ahead of the Spartanettes 2-1 in the top of the second.
» The Hornets out-hit the Spartans at a 10-7 clip.

GAME 2 | Norfolk State 7, Delaware State 4
 

NORFOLK, VA --Four Delaware State players notched multiple hits, but the Hornets fell to the Norfolk State Spartanettes 7-4 Saturday.

Kristin White (1-6) got the ball to start for Delaware State (6-10, 1-1) and took the loss.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting two runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Delaware State plated two runs when Mianna Lopez left the yard with Karly Cain aboard.

The Spartans then rallied to score six runs and take a 6-2 lead before the Hornets got back on the board in the fifth. Delaware State brought home a pair, with one run driven in by Kaylanie Rodriguez's single, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Spartanettes. The Hornets were unable to get any closer, as Norfolk State added one run to their tally on the way to a 7-4 final.
