BALTIMORE — The Delaware State volleyball team lost to the Morgan State Lady Bears in five sets Friday at Hill Field House (25-18, 20-25, 13-25, 25-19, 10-15).
The loss dropped the Hornets to 12-7 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Aaliyah Mitchell led a balanced Delaware State attack with 17 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. Jalia Dublin and Emma Patmon each added 10 kills, giving the Hornets three players in double figures. Dublin also had five blocks.
Courtney Nix led the defense with 19 digs, and Paige Ahakuelo added 15. Ahakuelo also had a team-high 25 assists. Amanda Santos Juliao had a team-high two aces.
The Hornets won the opening set after taking the lead for good at 5-4. They led by as many as seven points at 22-15 and had 16 kills in the set.
Morgan State evened the match with a 25-20 win in the second set. Delaware State trailed by as many as six points as the Lady Bears took the lead for good at 21-20. The set was tied nine times.
The Lady Bears took a 2-1 lead with a 25-13 victory in the third set. They went ahead for good at 7-6 and built a lead of as many as 12 points.
Delaware State forced a fifth set by winning the fourth 25-19. The Hornets took the lead for good at 16-15 after rallying from a two-point deficit, the largest lead for Morgan State in the set. The set featured 12 ties and five lead changes, and Delaware State had three aces.
In the deciding set, the Hornets fell behind on the first point and could not catch up, losing 15-10.
