Big games from Mcelrath and Cottingham Not Enough in Hornets 85-49 Loss to Howard

NORFOLK, VA --Kiarra Mcelrath scored 24 points and Mahogany Cottingham had 10 more, but the Hornets fell to the Howard Bison 85-49 at Scope Arena Wednesday.

Mcelrath led the Hornets (5-24) with 24 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Cottingham tacked on 10 points and Circe Rubio Remolar chipped in as well with five points from the bench.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 21-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-21 halftime deficit.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 66-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down one three-pointer in the quarter to score three of its seven total points.

Delaware State kept the Bison from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kiarra McElrath's three, to shrink the deficit to 70-37 with 5:37 to go in the contest. Howard responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 85-49. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 21 points.
