Delaware State Falls to Coppin State 73-59

Cottingham and Mcelrath Combine to Score 37

MEMORIAL HALL, --Mahogany Cottingham and Kiarra Mcelrath combined to score 37 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Coppin State Eagles 73-59 at home Saturday.

The Hornets (5-21, 1-11) had two players score in double figures, led by Cottingham, who had 20 points and two steals. Mcelrath added 17 points, four assists and four steals from the bench and Ericka Huggins added eight points, 14 rebounds and two blocks.

Led by Nala Abraham's two offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in nine second chance points.

The Delaware State defense held Coppin State shooters to only 37.1 percent from the field.
 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 41-22 halftime deficit.

Coppin State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 43-22 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Circe Rubio Remolar, to trim its deficit to 43-28 with 8:10 to go in the third. Coppin State countered and stretched its lead to 63-37 heading into the fourth. Delaware State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled seven of the team's 15 third-quarter points.

Delaware State kept the Eagles from increasing their lead before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Cottingham's layup, to shrink the deficit to 69-51 with 5:35 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept their comeback going, but Coppin State managed to hold on for the 73-59 win. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 22 points.
