Delaware State shoots 53.3 percent from deep, beats Coppin State 84-61

BALTIMORE, MD --The Delaware State men's basketball team shot 53.3 percent from beyond the arc on the way to an 84-61 win over the Coppin State Eagles on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (11-10, 3-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Robert Smith, who had 20 points, five assists and two steals. Martaz Robinson added 19 points, five assists and two steals and Kaseem Watson chipped in as well with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Led by Muneer Newton's three offensive rebounds, Delaware State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 15 second chance points.

Delaware State's defense held Coppin State to only 37.7 percent shooting from the field, including 9.1 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After jumping out to an 18-8 advantage, Delaware State went on a 14-0 run with 10:39 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Alston Andrews, to increase its lead to 32-8. The Hornets then added six points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 52-22 advantage. Delaware State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down seven shots to account for 21 of its 52 points.

Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 78-55 with 3:24 to go in the contest. The Hornets held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 84-61 win. Delaware State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 32 points in the lane.
