Defensive Effort Comes Up Short, Hornets fall to UCF 74-46

ORLANDO, FL --The Delaware State women's basketball team held UCF to just 7.7 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-13 shooting performance, but fell 74-46 to the Knights on the road Sunday.

Jermesha Frierson led the Hornets (3-7) with eight points and four assists. Nykesha Sanders also tacked on nine points and Iman Addison helped out with five points from the bench.

Delaware State's defense held UCF to only 7.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 16-13.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 32-16 halftime deficit.

UCF continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 41-22 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Aniyah Jones, to trim its deficit to 41-27 with 5:39 to go in the third. UCF countered and stretched its lead to 58-35 heading into the fourth. Delaware State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.

UCF kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 72-37 advantage before Delaware State went on a 9-0 run, finished off by Channing Williams' three, to shrink the deficit to 72-46 with 39 seconds to go in the contest. UCF responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-46. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 11 points.
