DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team displayed impressive determination with a 3-2 win against the Norfolk State Spartanettes Sunday at home at Memorial Hall.
The conference victory improved Delaware State's record to 10-15 overall and 6-5 in MEAC action.
The Hornets attack was paced by Aaliyah Mitchell, who finished with 17 kills on the day, and by Gerren Tomlin, who had 16 while hitting .294. got 14 digs from Paige Ahakuelo to lead them defensively.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets took control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-16. Delaware State opened up its biggest lead, nine points, to close out the set, totaling 16 kills along the way. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set.
SET 2 | Delaware State dropped set two 25-21 to tie the match 1-1. The Hornets fell in a back-and-forth set, losing in a stanza that featured seven lead changes and was tied 13 times. Neither team led by more than four points along the way.
SET 3 | Delaware State then lost their second set in a row, falling behind in the match two sets to one. The Hornets came up short by the score of 25-21. Delaware State trailed by as many as seven points as Norfolk State grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was tied up two times before the Spartanettes took over the lead.
SET 4 | Delaware State broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 25-16 victory in set number four. The Hornets led from the opening point on in the set to secure the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a 13 point lead at 22-9 before closing out the stanza. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with five aces in the set.
SET 5 | Delaware State battled back from down two sets to one to win two straight sets, culminating in a 15-10 fifth-set victory, and grab the 3-2 win. The Hornets grabbed the fifth set thanks to a strong performance on the attacking side. Delaware State put together a .353 attack percentage with nine kills in the set win. The Hornets ended on a strong note, stretching their lead to its largest point in the set to finish out the stanza.
