DOVER, Delaware -- Delaware State used a huge 205-yard performance on the ground and two rushing touchdowns to pick up a 26-13 win against Howard Saturday afternoon at home at Alumni Stadium.
The Hornets improved to 8-3 on the year and 4-0 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play, while the Bison fell to 4-7 and 1-3.
Marquis Gillis totaled 92 yards to lead the Hornets' ground attack in the game, picking up 5.8 yards per carry along the way. James Jones also tacked on 34 yards on the ground, picking up 4.2 yards per carry.
Terrence Rone hauled in three catches for 90 yards.
Wayne Favors III showed out for the Delaware State defense, totaling three tackles and one interception. Jadarrius Perkins added five tackles, 1.0 TFL, one sack, one interception, and two pass breakups and Alexander Cossignani had one recovered fumble in the win.
The Hornets won the turnover battle in Saturday's game, forcing three turnovers while coughing the ball up one time, with Delaware State turning those takeaways into nine points. Delaware State recorded a big outing on the ground, racking up 205 rushing yards while averaging 4.1 yards per carry and out-rushing Howard by 162 yards.
Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Howard offensive attack, holding the Bison to 295 total yards. The Hornets badgered the Howard passing attack all game long, racking up four sacks and grabbing two interceptions.
How It Happened
Delaware State got on the scoreboard first with 10:55 remaining in the second quarter to take a 3-0 lead.Howard then tied things at 3-3 before the Hornets responded with a five-yard touchdown rush from to jump back ahead 10-3.
Delaware State continued to build its advantage, scoring again with :29 remaining in the second quarter to go ahead 17-3.The Hornets continued to expand their lead after Howard narrowed the gap to 23-6, scoring again to go ahead 26-6. Delaware State didn't score again in the game and Howard tacked on seven more points to finish off the scoring.
