DOVER, DE --Kelsie Dawson racked up 13 kills with a .632 hitting percentage to help carry the Delaware State volleyball team to a 3-2 victory (25-23, 25-14, 19-25, 20-25, 15-9) against the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs Sunday at home at Memorial Hall.
The conference win improved Delaware State's record to 9-14 overall and 5-4 in MEAC action.
The Hornets offense was paced by Dawson, who finished with 13 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .632, and by Aaliyah Mitchell, who had 11 while hitting .273. Defensively, had two players reach double figures in digs as Gerren Tomlin had 14 and Autumn Richardson had 10.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets took control on the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to secure the first set 25-23. Delaware State led by as many as seven points at 14-7 before closing out the set, totaling 17 kills in the set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked six South Carolina State attacks in the stanza.
SET 2 | Delaware State continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-14 victory in set number two. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 11 points, to finish off the set. The Hornets hit .429 over the course of the set.
SET 3 | Delaware State saw its bid for a 3-0 win end when South Carolina State took set three. The Hornets fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before falling in the set 25-19.
SET 4 | Delaware State then dropped their second straight set 25-20 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Hornets trailed by as many as six points as South Carolina State grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 and Delaware State was never able to recover in a set that was knotted up eight times before the Lady Bulldogs took over in the second half of the stanza.
SET 5 | Delaware State needed a fifth set to secure victory. After they jumped out to an early two sets to none lead, South Carolina State responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Hornets finished off their victory with a 15-9 fifth-set win. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the fifth set to earn the victory. Delaware State ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, six points, to finish off the set, collecting 10 kills in the process.
