DOVER, Delaware --Three rushers went over 100 yards Saturday afternoon, led by James Jones' 158 yards, and Delaware State cruised to a 70-23 win at home over Southern Connecticut State.
The victory improved Delaware State's record to 4-3 on the season while the Fighting Owls fell to 1-4.
Individually, Jones led the way for the three rushers who crossed the century mark, racking up 158 yards and two touchdowns. Marquis Gillis followed with 130 yards and one touchdown and added yards.
Nathan Stewart reeled in four catches for 70 yards.
Amir Anderson showed out for the Delaware State defense, totaling one interception. Leshawn Stuckey added three tackles and one recovered fumble and Jaydon Mifflin had four tackles, 1.5 TFL, and one sack in the win.
Both teams forced two turnovers in Saturday's contest, with Delaware State turning those takeaways into 13 points. Delaware State also had an outstanding day offensively, totaling 791 total yards, 608 on the ground and 183 through the air, while averaging 16.5 yards per play and out-gaining Southern Connecticut State. Delaware State converted on 50 percent of third-down attempts on the day.
Delaware State's defense held up against Southern Connecticut State's offense, giving up 314 total yards. The Hornets defense took up residence in Southern Connecticut State's backfield all game, collecting four sacks and 12 total tackles for loss.
How It Happened
Delaware State put up 70 points on nine different scoring plays. The Hornets got on the board first, taking the lead for good at 8-0 with 8:31 remaining in the first quarter. Jones powered in a 90-yard touchdown run to finish off a two-play, 95-yard scoring drive. Dyson Roberts ran in a two-point conversion attempt. The Hornets then rode that lead to victory, increasing their advantage by 39 points along the way.
