Big games from Mcelrath, Cottingham and Barnes not enough in Hornets 94-54 loss to Norfolk State

MEMORIAL HALL, --Kiarra Mcelrath, Mahogany Cottingham and Brooke Barnes combined to score 43 of Delaware State's 54 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 94-54 at home Monday.

The Hornets (3-12, 0-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Mcelrath, who had 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Cottingham tacked on 15 points and Barnes helped out with 11 points.

Delaware State grabbed 43 rebounds in Monday's game compared to Norfolk State's 39, led by Circe Rubio Remolar's eight boards. The Hornets also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 14 second chance points.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 26-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 47-29 halftime deficit.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 74-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State turned five offensive rebounds into five second chance points on the way to scoring nine total points in the quarter.

Norfolk State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 90-46 advantage before Delaware State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Barnes' three, to shrink the deficit to 90-51 with 1:37 to go in the contest. Norfolk State responded and outscored the Hornets the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 94-54. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
