CHARLOTTE, NC --The Delaware State volleyball team lost to the Towson Tigers in straight sets (8-25, 20-25, 21-25) Friday at Halton Arena.

The non-conference loss moved Delaware State to 0-4 on the season.

Gerren Tomlin finished with 11 kills on the day to lead the Hornets attack. got six digs from Paige Ahakuelo to lead them defensively.
 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-8. Delaware State trailed by as many as 17 points as Towson never gave up the lead in a set that was notted up just once before the Tigers took control.

SET 2 | A 25-20 set-two loss put Delaware State behind two sets to none in the match. The Hornets dropped the first point and never clawed back into the lead before dropping the set.

SET 3 | Delaware State could not win the third set and was swept by Towson. The Hornets fell in a back-and-forth battle, losing 25-21 in a set that featured seven lead changes and was tied 10 times. Neither team had a lead of more than four points along the way.

 

Match Two
Hannah Sanders collected nine kills with a .5 hitting percentage to help power the Delaware State volleyball team to a five-set victory (25-23, 25-22, 16-25, 17-25, 15-8) over the Charlotte 49ers Friday on the road at Halton Arena.

The non-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 1-4 on the season.

The Hornets were led by a double-double from Gerren Tomlin, who registered 17 kills and 10 digs on the day. Aaliyah Mitchell also added 10 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Morgan Allen chipped in for with 12 digs to go with two blocks from Sanders.
 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets opened up an early one set to none lead, winning a close first set 25-23. Delaware State grabbed the advantage for good at 24-23 in a set that showcased three lead changes before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. The Hornets opening set win came in a stanza where they hit .300 and 17 of their 25 points came via the kill. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set.

SET 2 | Delaware State took set two 25-22 to swiftly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to secure the victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a six point lead at 13-7 before closing out the set.

SET 3 | Delaware State couldn't end the match in a sweep, dropping set three to make their lead two sets to one in the match. The Hornets dropped a tough set 25-16. Delaware State trailed by as many as nine points as Charlotte grabbed the advantage for good at 15-14 in a set that was tied up 10 times before the 49ers took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 4 | Delaware State then dropped their second straight set 25-17 to brind the match level at two sets apiece. The Hornets dropped the set despite a strong performance on the attacking end. Delaware State registered a .333 attack percentage with 14 kills in the set loss.

SET 5 | Delaware State needed a fifth set to secure victory. After they grabbed a two sets to none lead, Charlotte responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Hornets finished off their victory with a 15-8 fifth-set win. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in set five to earn the victory. Delaware State ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, seven points, to close out the set.
