The Delaware State Bench Made an Impact by Scoring 36 points in 69-57 Loss to Howard

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 36-point showing from the bench, but fell 69-57 to the Howard Bison at home Monday.

The Hornets (6-14, 2-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Deyonce Thompson, who had 17 points and nine rebounds. Noami Zulueta tacked on 12 points and six rebounds and Denijsha Wilson chipped in as well with 11 points off of the bench.

The Delaware State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 19 attempts. Thompson was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining three treys in the contest.

Delaware State forced 14 Howard turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. McKenzie Stewart led the way individually with two steals.

How It Happened

Delaware State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 22-19.

Howard kept adding to that lead, building a 31-25 advantage before Delaware State went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Stewart, to tie the game at 31. Howard then took control, putting the Hornets at a 38-33 disadvantage heading into halftime.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 61-37 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring four of its four points in the paint.

Delaware State narrowed its deficit to 65-42 before going on a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 65-49 with 4:31 to go in the contest. The Hornets kept their comeback going, but Howard managed to hold on for the 69-57 win. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down eight of 19 long range attempts. The Hornets shared the ball well, recording an assist on 72 percent of made baskets. The Delaware State bench made an impact by scoring 36 points to its scoring output. The Delaware State defense forced 14 turnovers.
 

The Hornets return to action Saturday, February 17 when they travel to Coppin State University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
