Big Games From Perkins-Jackson, Mcelrath Not Enough in Delaware State's 79-52 Loss to Norfolk State

NORFOLK, VA --Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson and Kiarra Mcelrath combined to score 41 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 79-52 on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (6-13, 2-4) had two players score in double figures, led by Perkins-Jackson, who had 25 points. Mcelrath added 16 points and three steals and Circe Rubio Remolar added nine points and six rebounds.

The Delaware State offense was very productive from three point land, making eight threes on 20 attempts. Perkins-Jackson was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining four treys in the contest.

Delaware State did a great job disrupting Norfolk State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Noami Zulueta led the way individually for the Hornets with two rejections.

How It Happened

Delaware State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Norfolk State kept adding to that lead, building a 28-13 advantage before Delaware State went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Perkins-Jackson, to narrow its deficit to 28-22. Norfolk State responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Hornets trailing 37-24 heading into halftime.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 57-33 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its nine total points.

Delaware State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 79-52. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 19 points. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down eight of 20 long range attempts. The Delaware State bench made an impact by scoring 34 points to its scoring output. The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.

The Hornets return home Monday, February 5 when they host Howard University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
