NORFOLK, VA --The Delaware State men's basketball team fell to the Norfolk State Spartans 65-64 on the road Saturday on Tyrel Bladen's buzzer-beating shot with just two seconds left on the clock.
The Hornets (10-12, 3-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Deywilk Tavarez, who had 20 points. Martaz Robinson tacked on 13 points and seven rebounds and Jevin Muniz helped out with 12 points, five assists and two steals.
Delaware State out-rebounded Norfolk State 39-34 in Saturday's game, led by Wesley Oba's 11 boards. The Hornets also pulled down 18 offensive rebounds and scored 18 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 19-9, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 7:51 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Tavarez, to narrow its deficit to 19-17. The Hornets continued to close the gap, cutting the Norfolk State lead to 29-28 by the end of the first half.
Norfolk State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 44-39 advantage before Delaware State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Muniz's layup, to seize a 47-44 lead with 11:41 to go in the contest. Norfolk State re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 21-17 the rest of the way to hand Delaware State the 65-64 loss. Delaware State made the most of eight offensive rebounds to tack on 13 second chance points out of 36 total in the period. Wesley Oba notched a double-double for the Hornets with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Delaware State lost on a last-second shot by Tyrel Bladen.
The Hornets return home Monday, February 5 when they host to Howard University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
