BALTIMORE, MD --Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson, Denijsha Wilson and Savannah Brooks combined to score 35 of Delaware State's 46 total points, but the Hornets fell to the Coppin State Eagles 53-46 on the road Saturday.
Perkins-Jackson led the Hornets (6-15, 2-6) with 13 points. Wilson added 12 points and two steals and Brooks helped out with 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 16 Coppin State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into eight points on the other end of the floor. McKenzie Stewart's three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
Delaware State started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Wilson, to take an early lead with 4:53 left in the first quarter. The Hornets then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 8-5 advantage. Delaware State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring four of its eight points close to the basket.
Delaware State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:01 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 13-7. The Hornets proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 21-12 advantage heading into halftime. Delaware State saw non-starters score five of its 13 total points off the bench in the quarter.
Delaware State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Stewart, to expand its lead further to 37-31 with seven seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Coppin State then erased the Delaware State lead in the game's final quarter for a 53-46 comeback victory. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its nine points in the paint. The Hornets held the Eagles to only 26.9 percent shooting from the field. Delaware State played solid perimeter defense, holding Coppin State to 20 percent from beyond the arc on 20 attempts. The Delaware State bench came alive by scoring 16 points to its scoring output. The Delaware State defense forced 16 turnovers. The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording five blocks as a team.
