Delaware State Shoots 50 Percent from Deep, Knocks off Coppin State 66-56

BALTIMORE, MD --The Delaware State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from deep on the way to a 66-56 victory over the Coppin State Eagles on the road Saturday.

The Hornets (11-13, 4-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Deywilk Tavarez, who had 22 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Wesley Oba tacked on 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks off the bench and Jevin Muniz chipped in as well with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Delaware State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 15 assists on 24 made field goals. Tavarez's eight assists were the most for the Hornets.

Delaware State forced 13 Coppin State turnovers. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Muniz's two steals led the way for Delaware State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 15-11, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 12:36 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Tavarez, to take a 19-15 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 35-30.

Delaware State narrowed its deficit to 43-42 before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Martaz Robinson's jumper, to seize a 53-43 lead with 9:22 to go in the contest. The Hornets held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 66-56 win. Delaware State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 36 total points. The Hornets made half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down seven of 14 shots. The Hornets held the Eagles to only 31 percent shooting from the field. Delaware State tallied 15 total assists in the game. Delaware State had a 42-33 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 13 turnovers. The Hornets were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, tallying five blocks as a team.

The Hornets return to action Monday, February 19 when they host Morgan State University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
