CHARLESTON, S.C. --The Delaware State Hornets got three hits from sophomore E. Bouldin in an 8-5 loss to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers Friday.
Freshman Eddie Del (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Delaware State (0-1). Sophomore Jack Messmore was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going five innings, surrendering one run on one hit, walking one and striking out five.
In addition to his three hits, Bouldin had a double and an RBI to lead the Hornets. Sophomore Joey Current compiled a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Senior Chris Amparo also chipped in for Delaware State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Delaware State got on the board thanks to Current's RBI double with two outs.
The Hornets then held the Buccaneers scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Bouldin came across to score the lone run of the inning for Delaware State, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hornets.
Delaware State's lead had disappeared once the fourth inning came around and turned into a 3-2 Charleston Southern advantage, when the Hornets tied up the game at three.
The game remained tied until the very next inning, when Delaware State got moving again on offense. The Hornets scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior K. Bouldin, bringing the Delaware State advantage to 4-3.
Charleston Southern then mounted a comeback, taking an 8-4 lead heading into the ninth, when the Hornets cut that deficit to 8-5. Delaware State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore E. Bouldin. The ballgame ended with that ninth inning rally falling short. The Hornets out-hit the Buccaneers at a 9-4 clip. Delaware State went 3-for-10 (.300) with runners in scoring position. Delaware State pitchers faced 40 Charleston Southern hitters in the game, allowing six ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out 10. Charleston Southern was led offensively by senior Dakota Miller, who went 1-for-3 with a home run and an RBI.
