Hornets Fall to Pirates 64-47

Come Up Short Despite Defensive Effort

MEMORIAL HALL, --The Delaware State women's basketball team held Hampton to just 9.1 percent from deep in a 1-for-11 shooting performance, but fell 64-47 to the Pirates at home Monday.

Kiarra Mcelrath led the Hornets (3-10) with 15 points and two steals. McKenzie Stewart also added six points, 10 rebounds and two steals and Brooke Barnes chipped in as well with eight points.

Delaware State out-rebounded Hampton 34-33 in Monday's game, paced by Stewart's 10 boards.

The Delaware State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Monday's game, forcing 19 Hampton turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Stewart's two steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

 

How It Happened

Delaware State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 14-11.

Hampton kept adding to that lead, building a 22-15 advantage before Delaware State went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Kiarra McElrath, to take a 24-22 lead. The Pirates then came roaring back to take a 26-24 lead heading into halftime.

Delaware State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Hornets faced a 49-33 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Delaware State took advantage of six Hampton turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of takeaways.

Hampton kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 64-37 advantage before Delaware State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Nala Abraham's layup, to shrink the deficit to 64-47 with five seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Delaware State took advantage of eight Hampton turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
