BALTIMORE, MD --Savannah Brooks hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 17 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime and Denijsha Wilson put the Delaware State women's basketball team ahead for good with five seconds to go the extra period to give the Hornets a 73-71 win over the Morgan State Bears on the road Tuesday.
The Hornets (5-10, 1-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Ja'Naiah Perkins-Jackson, who had 18 points and two steals. Savannah Brooks tacked on 14 points, four assists and three steals and Tyshonne Tollie chipped in as well with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Delaware State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Tuesday's game, piling up 15 assists on 26 made field goals. Brooks' four assists were the most for the Hornets.
The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Tuesday's game, forcing 24 Morgan State turnovers while committing 22. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Brooks' three steals led the way individually for the Hornets.
How It Happened
After playing to a 7-7 tie early in the game, Delaware State went on an 8-0 run with 5:58 left in the first quarter to take a 15-7 lead. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 17-16.
The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 28-26 halftime deficit.
Morgan State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-35 advantage before Delaware State went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Brooks, to grab a 44-38 lead with 5:00 to go in the third. The Bears then rallied to tie it at 52-52 heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down six three-pointers in the quarter to score 18 of its 26 total points.
Morgan State then snagged a 54-52 advantage before Delaware State responded by going on a 6-0 run to seize a 58-54 lead with 7:10 to go in the fourth. The Bears then fought back to even things up at 63-63 and send the game to overtime.
Delaware State then took care of business in extra time, outscoring Morgan State 10-8 to seize victory by the 73-71 final score. The Hornets made over half of their attempts from three point range, knocking down eight of 15 shots.  Delaware State recorded 15 total assists in the game. The Delaware State defense forced 24 turnovers.  Delaware State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 10 offensive boards in the game.
The Hornets return to action Saturday, January 20 when they host University of Maryland Eastern Shores in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
