Delaware State Gets 39 Bench Points in 61-49 Win Over South Carolina State

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team got a 39-point performance from the bench on the way to a 61-49 victory against the South Carolina State Bulldogs at home Saturday.

The Hornets (6-11, 2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson, who had 23 points and two steals. Denijsha Wilson added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists off of the bench and McKenzie Stewart added five points, six rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Delaware State out-rebounded South Carolina State 27-19 in Saturday's game, paced by Wilson's six boards.

The Delaware State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 22 South Carolina State turnovers while committing 21. Those takeaways turned into 24 points on the offensive end of the floor. Stewart's five steals led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

Delaware State started off strong, putting together an 11-9 lead heading into the second quarter. Delaware State capitalized on three South Carolina State turnovers in the period, turning them into four points on the other end of the floor.

Delaware State built that first quarter lead to 20-13 before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 2:42 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Kaitlyn Parker, to increase its lead to 30-13, a score that would hold until halftime. Delaware State forced six South Carolina State turnovers in the period and turned them into seven points.

After intermission, Delaware State held on to its advantage and owned a 45-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.

Delaware State kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run to grow the lead to 60-46 with 2:05 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 61-49 win. Delaware State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 16 points. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down five of 12 long range attempts. The Hornets never trailed after taking an 11-9 first quarter lead. Delaware State had a 27-19 edge on the boards in the win. The Delaware State defense forced 22 turnovers.
 

The Hornets return to action Monday, January 29 when they host North Carolina Central University in continued MEAC Conference play. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
