Hornets Come Up Short in a 62-20 Loss to Miami (OH)

OXFORD, Ohio -- Delaware State fell 62-20 to Miami (OH) on the road Saturday afternoon.

The RedHawks improved to 3-1 on the season while the Hornets dropped to 0-4.

Marqui Adams led Delaware State's passing attack with 274 yards through the air, tossing two touchdowns without throwing an interception. The signal caller also added 60 yards on the ground.

In addition to Adams' effort, Marquis Gillis paced the Hornets rushing attack by accumulating 18 yards over the course of the game.

Khyheem Waleed hauled in four catches for 125 yards. Wade Inge made his presence felt in the passing game, recording seven receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns. Eric Montes added three tackles and Semisi Faingataa had in the loss.

Defensively, Delaware State held up fairly well against the Miami (OH) passing attack, holding the RedHawks to 180 yards through the air.

How It Happened

Miami (OH) jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Delaware State responded to tie it up at 7-7 with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter.Miami (OH) then scored to take a 31-7 lead before the Hornets put a touchdown on the board to cut into the lead and make it a 31-13 game.

After Miami (OH) scored to increase its lead to 41-13, Delaware State got on the scoreboard again with 12:18 remaining in the third quarter to cut into the lead and make it a 41-20 game. Delaware State went scoreless the rest of the game while Miami (OH) tacked on 21 points to finish off the scoring. Miami (OH) outgained Delaware State 646-351 in the contest. Delaware State converted 5 of 15 third downs while Miami (OH) was successful on 8 of 10. Geovanny Fabian led the Hornets with nine tackles. Delaware State went 2-for-4 on fourth down, converting on 50 percent of attempts. The Hornets didn't allow a sack in the contest.
Delaware State won the time of possession battle 31:34 to 25:40. Brett Gabbert led the RedHawks passing attack, completing 15 of his 20 attempts for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Jordan Brunson led the Miami (OH) rushing attack with 109 yards and one touchdown.

The Hornets return will return to Alumni Stadium September 30 for their last non-conference match-up against Virginia Lynchburg. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
