DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 23-25, 30-28, 10-15) to the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday at home at Memorial Hall.
The non-conference loss dropped Delaware State to 7-7 on the season.
The Hornets were led by a double-double from Valeria Otero, who registered 14 kills and 13 digs on the day. Alondra Maldonado also added 19 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Gerren Tomlin chipped in for with 20 digs to go with four blocks from Kelsie Dawson.
Delaware State had three players in double figures in digs. Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai had a team-high two aces in the loss. Valeria Otero registered a double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Alondra Maldonado had a team-high 19 kills for Delaware State. Delaware State got a team-high 20 digs from Gerren Tomlin. Delaware State attackers were helped by a team-high 27 assists from Naz Tuncay.

SET 1 | The Hornets persevered in a back-and-forth first set to win 25-22 in a stanza that featured one lead change and was tied nine times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.
SET 2 | Delaware State then fell in the second set 25-19, tying the match at a set apiece. The Hornets fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before dropping the set.
SET 3 | Delaware State lost again in the third set to make it a 2-1 deficit. The Hornets dropped the set 25-23 despite a solid performance on the attacking end. Delaware State registered a .382 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set loss.
SET 4 | Delaware State broke their two set losing streak and forced a fifth set with a 30-28 victory in set number four. The Hornets survived a back-and-forth set to win in a stanza that featured six lead changes and was tied nine times. Neither team was able to grab a lead larger than four points along the way. The Hornets win came in a stanza where 20 of their 30 points came via the kill.
SET 5 | After dropping sets two and three, Delaware State won set four, knotting up the game at two sets apiece to force a fifth set, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing the set 15-10 and the match 3-2. The Hornets had a lead early in the set at 3-2 before Georgetown took over.
Delaware State will return to action on Friday, September 22 when they open up MEAC play against Coppin State in Memorial Hall. The first serves are scheduled for 6 p.m.
