DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-13, 25-20) over the NJIT Highlanders Friday at home at Memorial Hall.
The out-of-conference victory improved Delaware State's overall record to 6-6 on the season.
Gerren Tomlin finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .467. Defensively, had three players reach double figures in digs, including Ella Sanders' 11, 10 from Maria Caratini, and 10 more from Valeria Otero.
Valeria Otero had a match-high four aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-13. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the third set 25-20. Delaware State attackers were helped by a team-high 17 assists from Naz Tuncay.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets cruised to an early lead, easily winning the first set 25-16. Delaware State never trailed by more than five points and grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hornets took over the lead.
SET 2 | Delaware State won set two 25-13 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, 12 points, to close out the set. The Hornets hit .414 over the course of the set. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Delaware State took set three to sweep the match 3-0. The Hornets scored first and never trailed in the set to earn a 25-20 victory. Delaware State opened up as much as a seven point lead at 14-7 before closing out the set, totaling 17 kills while only notching two attack errors along the way.
Delaware State will return to action on Saturday, September 16 when they face University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown  in day two of the Delaware State Invitational. The first serves are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
