HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. --- Delaware State wrapped up the 2023 Hofstra Invitational by splitting a pair of 3-1 decisions, first with a win over Siena College followed by a loss to tournament Hofstra University.

Siena took the first set with a commanding 25-8 win however Delaware State responded by winning the next three to seal the second win of the season.

The Hornets were led offensively by
Gerren Tomlin who tallied a game-best 16.5 points. Tomlin landed a team-best 11 kills and five service aces while also recording eight digs and one block assist.

Alondra Maldonado notched 10 kills for her second-straight double-digit kill game of the year. Maldonado chipped in on the defensive side of the net as she got up for three block assists.

Naz Tuncay (19) and
Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai (18) combined for 37 of the team's 44 total assists.

Defensively, junior middle blocker
Kelsie Dawson tallied six block assists to go with her five kills for a total of eight points in this match.
Maria Carattini led a trio of Hornets with double-dight digs (12) and she was joined by Kalulu-Sugai (11) and
Valeria Otero (10). Otero also landed five kills and four service aces.

As a team, Delaware State held Siena to a .064 hitting percentage only allowing 33 kills on 125 total attempts.

Hofstra set the tone of the night cap from the start clinching the first two sets of the match. Delaware State would not go away quietly as the Hornets took the third set and did not make the decisive fourth set easy for the tournament host.

Maldonado paced the offensive efforts with a team-high 12 kills to go with her three block assists for a total of 13.5 points. Otero and
Ella Sanders chipped in with 8.5 points apiece. Otero recorded six kills, two service aces and one block assist while Sanders came away with eight kills and one block assist.

Kalulu-Sugai notched the first double-double of her collegiate career by way of 22 assists and 11 digs. Carattini (10) collected her third-straight game with at least 10 digs.

Delaware State will return to action on Tuesday with a nonconference contest at Temple. First serve is currently scheduled for 6 p.m.
