BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Delaware State baseball team paid a visit to Lehigh University for its midweek matchup and fell by a final score of 12-9.
Â
The Hornets faced an eight-run deficit heading into the late innings looking to make a comeback.
Â
Jancarlos Colon recorded an RBI-ground out to score
Chris Amparo cutting the Lehigh lead to 12-5 in the top of the eighth frame.
Brady Daniels followed that with an RBI-single to center field trimming the gap in half for a 12-6 game through eight complete innings.
Â
The top of the ninth started off with a
Trey Paige walk and a
Krew Bouldin single with
Alec Rodriguez stepping up to the plate. Before Rodriguez took a swing,
Hiram Davis was called upon to pinch run for Bouldin at first base.
Â
Rodriguez would place a single in play that caused two errors and allowing himself, Davis and Paige to all score on the play cutting the Mountain Hawk lead in half again for a 12-9 ball game. A three-run deficit would be as close to the lead as the Hornets would see for the remainder of the afternoon.
Â
Paige opened up the scoring in his first at-bat with what would be the first of a two two-run home run day for the third baseman. The first one was put over the left center field wall and scored
Nick Gnardellis who was hit by a pitch one batter prior for the only Hornet lead in this matchup. Paige's second home run came in the top of the sixth and put over the right field wall. This round tripper would also score Gnardellis.
Paige's four RBIs and two walks were both game-highs while his two hits tied for a team-best as he was joined by
Chris Amparo and
Myles Eaddy who also recorded a pair of knocks in the loss. Colon and Daniels accounted for the other Hornet RBIs.
Â
Delaware State concludes its extended away stand this week with a three-game series at Penn State. First pitch of Thursday's series opener is currently scheduled for 6 p.m.
