BIG INNINGS KEY SPARTANS’ DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF HORNETS

Dover, Del. (Apr. 21, 2023) --- Visiting Norfolk State had a five-run inning in the opener, and a seven-run frame in game two to key its sweep of Delaware State in a MEAC doubleheader today. The Spartans took the first game 7-3 and completed the sweep with an 11-3 victory in the nightcap. In the opener, Norfolk State led 1-0 before putting five runs on the board in the top of the third inning to open up a 6-0 lead. The Spartans committed five errors in game one, leading to two of the Hornets' three runs. Uxua Lopez singled in a seventh inning run to round out the scoring for Delaware State. Kenna Higa was two-for-three with a home run, double and three runs batted in to lead Norfolk State in the opener.
In game two, Norfolk State led 4-3 before blowing the game open with seven runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lily Potter, Victoria Ruiz and Yrral Davis drove in two runs each in the nightcap for the Spartans. Shortstop Britney Phally had three of Delaware State's seven hits, while Lopez and Felicity Munoz drove in runs for the Hornets in game two.
Norfolk State committed five more errors, while Delaware state had three miscues in the second game.
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game on Saturday at the Delaware State softball field. The game is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
