Dover, Del. (Apr. 22, 2023) --- Delaware State led by three after two innings, but visiting Norfolk State chipped away, scoring the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to defeat the Hornets 4-3 in the finale of a three-game series today. The Spartans swept the series to improve to 22-17 overall and 12-5 in the MEAC, while the Hornets fell to 8-28 and 2-15. The contest also marked the final home appearance for Delaware State seniors
Felicity Munoz, Sidney Hoffman, Joie Raybourn and Emma Glawson.
The score was 3-3 when Norfolk State's Alison Guckin tripled with one out in the top of the seventh inning and scored the go-ahead run when Rylie Gilbreath followed with a sacrifice fly.
Delaware State opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Britney Phally walked to lead off the inning, and moved to second when Glawson followed with a single to left field. There was one out when
Emma Crowe singled to center, with Phally and Glawson each scoring after a Norfolk State error on the play. Crowe later crossed the plate on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Norfolk State scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to even the score.
The Hornets will close out the regular season on the road, visiting Penn on Tuesday (Apr. 25) before traveling to Howard next weekend (Apr. 29-30).
