Hornets blank Spartans in series opener

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team opened its three-game Northeast Conference (NEC) series against Norfolk State University with a 2-0 win at Bob Reed Field on Friday.

After five innings of scoreless baseball, right fielder Wilfredo Mendez broke the seal in his first game back from injury with a solo home run over the right field wall for a 1-0 Hornet lead after six complete frames. First baseman Chris Amparo doubled the Delaware State advantage just one inning later with a solo shot of his own over the left field wall.

Mendez led the offensive efforts with a game-best two-hit performance at the plate. Mason Brewer, Jancarlos Colon, Nick Gnardellis and Alec Rodriguez joined Amparo and Mendez in the hit column.

Senior pitcher Jordan Haddaway put on a show for the fans in attendance as he lasted a season-long seven innings while sitting down a season-best nine Spartans. Haddaway only gave up four hits and allowed just a pair of free bases while blanking Norfolk State in his outing. Hunter Thompson and Hiram Davis combined for the last two innings of relief, each of whom threw one inning of no-hit baseball to preserve the shutout win.

Delaware State and Norfolk State will pick the series back up on Saturday afternoon. First pitch at Bob Reed Field is currently scheduled for 1 p.m.
