Hornets concede series to Warriors

DOVER, Del. --- The Delaware State baseball team lost a Northeast Conference (NEC) contest to Merrimack College 9-4 in Sunday's series finale at Bob Reed Field.

After a scoreless first inning, the Warriors posted a five-run second inning to a establish a lead that was not given up for the remainder of the game.

Three of Delaware State's four runs came by way of solo home runs from three different Hornets. The first came from third baseman Chris Amparo who belted a solo home run in the bottom of the second to eliminate the possibility of being blanked on the scoreboard.

Shortstop Wilfredo Mendez notched his first home run in a Delaware State uniform after launching a solo shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the seventh to cut Merrimack's lead down to 9-3. While Nick Gnardellis who served as the designated hitter in the contest, recorded his third home run in two games in the bottom of the ninth inning.

First baseman Krew Bouldin notched the only multi-hit game for Delaware State leading the Hornets with a pair of hits in five trips to the plate. Trey Paige, Alec Rodriguez and Jordan King joined Amparo, Gnardellis and Mendez in collecting a hit in the loss.

Delaware State returns to action on Tuesday for a midweek matchup with the Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy. First pitch from Bob Reed Field is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.
