BALTIMORE, Md. --- The Delaware State women's basketball team earned its second-straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory and fourth on the year after defeating Morgan State University 55-54 on Saturday.Â
Both teams spent the first quarter battling for that early edge to set the tone that ended in a 17-15 advantage in favor of Delaware State. The Hornets scored nine of their 17 points from behind the three-point line to power the two-point lead at the end of the first frame.Â
Delaware State exploded both offensively and defensively through quarter number two holding Morgan State to just six points while scoring 15 for a 32-24 lead to conclude the first half of action.Â
The Bears outscored the Hornets 30-23 in the second half, however a layup from senior forward
Jessica Martino with less than two minutes remaining would prove to be the difference maker that sealed the away win for Delaware State.Â
With three Hornets scoring double-digit points, Martino led the way with a season-high 17 after shooting a team-best 8-of-12 from the field while knocking down one of her two free throws. Martino finished the game with four rebounds, one assist and one block.Â
Senior guard
Alexis Moragne notched 13 points in the win powered by a team-high two-three pointers. Moragne also came down with four rebounds while handing out two helpers and collecting two steals.Â
Reigning back-to-back MEAC Rookie of the Week
Savannah Brooks proved to be effective on both sides of the ball after scoring 11 points and hauling in a team-high seven rebounds. Brooks took the ball away from Morgan State three times, dished out a trio of dimes and handed out one block in the win.Â
Jayla Johnson chipped in with eight points, three assists and a pair of steals and rebounds each.Â
Offensively as a team, Delaware State outshot Morgan State 47.9% - 39.7% while also holding the edge on the boards (32-31).Â
Defensively,
Breionna Dodson matched a season-best six rebounds all coming after Morgan State missed shots. She also handed out a block to join Brooks and Martino in the three Hornet rejections.Â
Associate Head Coach
Jazmone Turner was about the team's performance in the win and stated "I couldn't be more proud of our team than I am right row. We played with a lot of fire and passion throughout the game, even when Morgan came back to take the lead. When we play with the kind of effort and confidence we showed today, we can accomplish a great deal for the rest of the regular season and the MEAC Tournament."Â Â
Today's win marks the second of two straight wins in the 2022-23 season as Delaware State defeated Wilmington University (66-36) and New Jersey City University (88-48) earlier in the year. This is also the first time since the 2019-20 campaign that Delaware State recorded back-to-back MEAC wins after defeating South Carolina State University.
Delaware State will return home for its final two MEAC contests in the 2022-23 regular season before taking part in the MEAC Tournament. The Hornets will host the Eagles of Coppin State University on Monday followed by the regular season finale against University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Thursday.Â
Both games are currently scheduled to tipoff at 5:30 p.m. from Memorial Hall. Â
