Delaware State Defeats New Jersey City 91-52 in Back and Forth Contest

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State women's basketball team earned a hard-fought 91-52 victory over the New Jersey City Gothic Knights at home Sunday in a back-and-forth game that neither led by more than five points.

The Hornets (3-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Savannah Brooks, who had 22 points and eight rebounds. Tyshonne Tollie added 18 points and two steals and Ja-Naiah Perkins-Jackson helped out with 17 points.

Delaware State out-rebounded New Jersey City 40-30 in Sunday's game, led by nine boards from McKenzie Stewart. The Hornets also pulled down 13 offensive rebounds and scored eight second chance points.

Delaware State forced 20 New Jersey City turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Sunday's game. The Hornets turned those takeaways into 30 points on the offensive end of the floor. Denijsha Wilson led the way individually with three steals.

How It Happened

Delaware State started off strong, putting together a 24-10 lead heading into the second quarter. Delaware State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 24 points.

The Hornets used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 48-26 edge. Delaware State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 24 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Delaware State added to its advantage and owned a 69-43 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Delaware State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.

The Hornets coasted to the win from there, increasing their margin of victory by outscoring the Gothic Knights 22-9 in the fourth quarter. Delaware State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 22 points in the paint. The Hornets shot well from three point range, knocking down 12 of 27 long range attempts. The Hornets held the Gothic Knights to only 32.3 percent shooting from the field. The Hornets turned 20 turnovers into 30 points on the offensive end. Delaware State had a 40-30 edge on the boards in the win.

The Hornets return to action Thursday, December 18 when they host the University of Delaware. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
