Hornets Secure 3-Set Sweep Against Morgan State

DOVER, DE --The Delaware State volleyball team needed only three sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) to knock off the Morgan State Lady Bears Sunday at home at Memorial Hall.

The victory boosted the Hornets' record to 12-11 overall and 5-4 in MEAC play.

Alondra Maldonado finished with eight kills on the day to lead the Hornets offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .25. The Hornets got eight digs from Gerren Tomlin to lead them defensively. Maria Verrier had a match-high three aces in the win. Delaware State never trailed on the way to winning the second set 25-16. 
Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 10 assists from Kaulana Kalulu-Sugai. 

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Hornets opened up an early one set to none lead, winning the first set 25-20. Delaware State grabbed the advantage for good at 20-19 in a set that had just one lead change before the Hornets took over in the second half of the stanza. Delaware State also supplemented their offense with three aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked four Morgan State attacks in the stanza.

SET 2 | Delaware State won the second set 25-16 to quickly jump to a 2-0 lead. The Hornets took a 1-0 lead and never looked back in the set to earn the victory. Delaware State opened its biggest lead of the stanza, nine points, to close out the set, totaling 15 kills along the way. The Hornets hit .423 over the course of the set.

SET 3 | Delaware State took the third set to win in straight sets. The Hornets took control of the set early when the score was 6-5 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-15. Delaware State led by as many as 11 points at 24-13 before finishing off the stanza. The Delaware State offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza. Delaware State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Morgan State attacks in the stanza.

Delaware State will return to action on Sunday, October 22 when they host Morgan State University. The first serves are scheduled for 5 p.m.
