DOVER, DE -- Ella Sanders and Gerren Tomlin each recorded double-doubles, but the Delaware State volleyball team was defeated by the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 24-26, 19-25) Friday in Memorial Hall.
The loss dropped Delaware State's record to 11-10 overall and 4-3 in MEAC action.
The Hornets were led by the double-doubles from Tomlin, who had 10 kills and 13 digs, and Sanders, who had 15 kills and 13 digs. Martyna Kmuk added 11 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Valeria Otero chipped in for with 10 digs to go with one block from Kmuk. Delaware State had four players in double figures in kills.
Delaware State had three players in double figures in digs. Gerren Tomlin had a team-high three aces in the loss. Ella Sanders had a match-high 15 kills for Delaware State. Delaware State attackers were helped by a match-high 22 assists from Naz Tuncay.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Hornets lost the first set 25-23 in spite of a strong performance on the attacking end. Delaware State put together a .306 attack percentage with 13 kills in the set loss.
SET 2 | Delaware State responded to pick up a 25-21 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The Hornets took the set with the help of a strong showing on the attacking end. Delaware State registered a .304 attack percentage with 19 kills in the set win. After the lead changed hands two times, the Hornets took control for good at 21-20 and rode that advantage to victory.
SET 3 | Maryland-Eastern Shore responded to win set number three, putting Delaware State in a two sets to one hole. The Hornets lost the set 26-24 in spite of a strong performance on the attacking side. Delaware State put together a .310 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set loss.
SET 4 | Delaware State then dropped the fourth set 25-19 to finish off the match. The Hornets fell behind on the first point and never clawed back into the lead before falling in the set.
Delaware State will return to action on Friday, October 20 when they travel to Coppin State University. The first serves are scheduled for 6 p.m.
