HORNETS UPEND BEARS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT WIN

Dover, Del. (Jan. 28, 2023) --- Martaz Robinson hit the winning basket on a leaning 12-foot jumper with 2.4 seconds left to give Delaware State a 64-62 victory over Morgan State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference thriller in Memorial Hall today. The Hornets have now won two games in a row to improve to 3-16 overall and 2-4 in the MEAC. The Bears (11-10; 4-2) had won seven of their previous eight games and were tied for first place in the MEAC entering the contest.  Delaware State trailed 30-29 at the break, but took control of the game in the second half, leading as many as 11 points. Morgan State clawed back, and tied the game at 62-62 on a three-point basket by Isaiah Burke with 21 seconds left to play. After a Delaware State time out, the Hornets worked the clock to set up Robinson for the game-winner from the left side of the hoop. The Bears had the final possession,  but committed a turnover as time expired. Robinson led the Hornets in scoring with 17 points on eight-for-16 shooting from the field, and hitting his lone free throw. He has scored 98 points in the last six contests to raise his season average to 9.4 points per game. Brandon Stone came off the bench to add 12 points and lead the Hornets with seven rebounds. Burke led three double-figure scorers for Morgan State with a game-high 18 points, highlighted by five three-pointers on nine attempts. Reserve Kamron Hobbs added 12 points and Daiquan Copeland 11 for the Bears. "I'm awfully proud of the way the guys fought during the entire game," said Delaware State second-year head coach Stan Waterman, whose team snapped a 15-game losing streak with an 88-85 overtime win at South Carolina State last Monday. "This was the type of game we were losing much of the season, but our confidence has been growing and the guys are making key plays on both ends of the court down the stretch." The Hornets hit 16 of their 31 second half shots (51.6%), while holding Morgan State to 39.3% shooting (11-for-28) in the final 20 minutes. Delaware State also held the rebounding edge 39-33 and blocked six shots, including three by center Raymond Somerville.
